CHARLOTTE (AP) _ The Carolina Panthers released safety Brent Alexander on Tuesday to make room under the salary cap and after the team picked up players for the secondary from last weekend's draft.

Alexander, the team's third leading tackler last year, was entering the final season of a three-year, $3 million deal.

Alexander became expendable after the Panthers used their first two draft picks on cornerback Rashard Anderson and safety Deon Grant. The Panthers also signed free agent cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock from Minnesota in February.
