Two Reported Beaten to Death in Labor Strife; Military Clamps Down

April 15, 1994

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Protests by tens of thousands of Indonesian factory workers over a laborer’s death turned violent Friday. Two workers were reported killed and eight injured during a military crackdown.

Workers in Medan, capital of North Sumatra, are seeking higher wages and greater freedom for labor unions.

The Medan area commander, Maj. Gen. R. Pranoto, said Thursday after the first day of labor strife that security forces would take action against those suspected of fomenting public disorder.

The government recognizes just one national labor organization, the All Indonesia Workers Association, which protesters say is a pawn of employers.
