DeNoyer ignites Lakeside rout of Phoenix

September 23, 2018

Will DeNoyer embodied Lakeside Lutheran’s evening at Luther Prep Friday night.

It’s not how many times you touch the ball; it’s what you do with it. Lakeside’s senior bolted 89 yards with the opening kickoff and also returned a fumble for a score in the Warriors’ 41-13 Capitol North football road win.

Despite running only 28 offensive plays, Lakeside (5-1, 2-0 North) ran away with the contest by also returning an interception for a score and striking on two big offensive plays in the first half. By taking care of the Phoenix (3-3, 0-2), the Warriors set up a tasty Slider Bowl (sorry, couldn’t resist) when Lake Mills visits next week.

“It was a crazy game,” Lakeside coach Paul Bauer said. “It was a different big-play type of night.”

DeNoyer started by beating three Phoenix tacklers to the right sideline before cutting back and finding open grass the rest of the way. When a pair of DeNoyer tackles led to a Luther Prep punt, Lakeside converted on a 3rd-and-9 in a big way on its first drive.

Cameron Paske got matched up with single coverage and quarterback Matt Davis found him with a high ball downfield. First Paske used his 6-foot-6 frame to go up and get it, then he spun and lost a defender for a 58-yard scoring play.

“He’s tough to guard at that size,” Bauer said. “He positioned himself for it and took off.”

After Prep’s Michael Zimpelmann blocked the extra point, Nathan de Galley took the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to the Warrior 5. But Charlie Miller blew up the Phoenix option mesh point and Isac Veers recovered for Lakeside on the next play.

Davis would lose the handle on a shotgun snap with Christian Koelpin recovering for the hosts four plays later at the Warrior 30. Preston Borchardt, who finished with 106 yards on 28 carries, capped the short drive from a yard out before Yuri Soloviyov found the right upright with the conversion kick.

That started a string of events where the game got away from the Phoenix, starting with a two-play drive where Davis bolted 66 yards on a veer keeper for a 20-6 lead with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. When Tersony Vater’s kickoff somehow checked up at the 3, Lakeside’s Joe Balistreri hauled de Galley down at his own 5.

It would become huge three plays later when Micah Kieselhorst, in his first start at QB for the Phoenix, misfired on an option pitch. DeNoyer wisely took his time to scoop and score the remaining two yards 54 seconds into the second quarter.

The hosts fed Borchardt for seven straight runs to set up a 4th-and-2 at the Warrior 41, where Kieselhorst lofted an out pass to the wide side of the field. It was also into the teeth of the wind, which combined with the break Brevin Jegerlehner got on the ball, led to a 60-yard pick-six.

“This was Micah’s first real week of playing quarterback,” Luther Prep coach Justin Gregorius explained. “He’s an athlete but he ran just a little in camp and at the scrimmage.

“He did a lot of good things. I’m proud of how our kids kept fighting.”

Silas Steinbrenner picked off Davis to thwart another Lakeside threat before the end of the half. LPS drove into Lakeside territory to start the second half but a penalty and a fumble led to Soloviyov being pressured into a 20-yard punt.

Lakeside took four plays to convert as DeNoyer’s block sprung Carter Buchta for a run of 34 yards. Casey Ponyicsanyi, who carried 10 times for 65 yards, took a 9-yard run in on the next play.

“Our defense was on the field a lot but they really played well,” Bauer said. “Everyone feels the pressure to get to three conference wins in our league so two feels good.”

This year’s crosstown clash is pivotal as both Lake Mills and Lakeside pursue North kingpin Lodi. The L-Cats swept a pair of meetings last year, including knocking Lakeside out in Level 1.

Luther Prep will try to get back on track when Poynette visits.
