Israel held by Azerbaijan 1-1 in WCup qualifier
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel was held to 1-1 by visiting Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday that left the host struggling to stay in contention.
Israel remained third place in Europe Group F, three points behind second-placed Russia with three games to play. Azerbaijan was fifth and long out of contention.
Rahid Amirgulyev put Azerbaijan in front with a long-range strike in the 61st minute and Itay Shechter equalized from close range in the 73rd.
Israel faces Russia away on Tuesday.
