Prep baseball/softball: St. Joe smashes Sherman in sectional

SETH, W.Va. — Lenny Washington hit a 330-foot grand slam home run to help third-seeded Huntington St. Joe clobber top-seeded Sherman 14-1 in the Class A, Region IV, Section 2 high school baseball tournament Friday.

The Irish play at No. 2 seed Buffalo at 6 p.m. Saturday. If St. Joe wins, it will play the Bison again at 6 p.m. Monday at Buffalo for the championship.

“In the second inning, the bottom half of the lineup put three on the board,” Irish coach Dave Jenkins said. “Then in the fourth, the top half started hitting. This probably was the best game we’ve played all year.”

Washington earned the win, allowing one run and two hits, with 10 strikeouts and one walk in 4 2/3 innings. Cory Sweeney pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.

Connor Joseph went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Luke Stollings drove in three and Bronson Barker two.

GREEN 5, PORTSMOUTH CLAY 2: Tayte Carver hit a three-run walk-off home run to give the Bobcats (20-3 overall, 11-1 Southern Ohio Conference) a victory over the Panthers (18-6 overall, 11-1 SOC) and a share of the league championship. Tanner Kimbler struck out 12 before giving way to Carver, who pitched one inning to pick up the win. Mason Barber went 2 for 4. Dakota Dodds was 2 for 4 for Clay.

COAL GROVE 9, PND 5: Nate Harmon hit two home runs to lead the visiting Hornets to a triumph over Portsmouth Notre Dame. Harmon went 2 for 2 with four RBI. Evan Gannon was the winning pitcher. Ben Compliment went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Tait Matney was 2 for 3. Tucker Hermann went 2 for 3 and Matt Boldman 2 for 4 for the Titans.

WAHAMA 3, WILLIAMSTOWN 2: The White Falcons (23-5) edged the Yellowjackets (20-9) in the Class A, Region IV, Section 1 tournament in Mason, West Virginia. Antonio Serevicz earned the win, allowing two hits, striking out nine and walking one. Serevicz and Tanner Smith drove in runs. Ehtyn Barnitz scored on a throwing error.


LAWRENCE COUNTY 6, BOYD COUNTY 5: Kassidi Cavins’ run on a passed ball proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs’ win over the Lions. Cavins homered earlier in the game. Olivia Mulhearn had two sacrifice flies.

WAVERLY 8, RIVER VALLEY 4: The home-standing Tigers defeated the Raiders (12-12) in a Division II sectional tournament game. Ball State University signee Hannah Robinson hit a two-run home run in Waverly’s four-run first inning, then smashed a grand slam in the fourth to make it 8-1. Robinson also was the winning pitcher. Kaylee Tucker hit a solo homer for River Valley. Cierra Roberts had three RBI for the Raiders.
