Minibus crash in central Jamaica kills 3 students
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaican police say a minibus crowded with youths collided with two other vehicles on a rural road, killing three high school students and injuring more than 20. Police say witnesses reported the minibus driver was racing with another bus.
Taxi and minibus drivers in Jamaica often drive at high speeds and swerve from lane to lane.
Police say the students were heading to school Wednesday morning in the central parish of Manchester when the accident happened.
Opposition leader Andrew Holness called on the government to fast track establishment of a rural bus system for school children, saying there have been far too many youngsters killed by reckless drivers.
Two years ago, four Manchester girls heading to school were killed when the minibus they were traveling in slammed into a wall.
