Mexico Deports Former Cuban Consul

October 5, 2000

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Immigration officials on Wednesday deported a former Cuban consul who had approached Mexican human rights activists about applying for political asylum.

Described by human rights activists as a former intelligence agent for Cuba, Pedro Anibal Riera Escalante was detained Tuesday in Mexico City for not having the legal papers to stay in the country, the government news agency Notimex reported Wednesday. Riera was consul to Mexico from 1988 to 1994.

Officials sent Riera back to Cuba on Wednesday.

Activists with the Miguel Agustin Pro Human Rights Center in Mexico City said Riera was a former intelligence agent who fled Cuba and recently met with them to seek political asylum. The activists said Riera had expressed fear of the Cuban government.

Riera arrived at Mexico City’s international airport in September, Notimex reported.
