Woman to remain jailed after attempted murder charge dropped
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A woman whose attempted murder case was dropped by a county prosecutor will remain in jail on federal gun charges.
Veronica Lewis was in federal court on Monday. WCAX-TV reports that the judge said she should be held pending trial, citing public safety as a concern.
Lewis is charged with unlawfully possessing a gun after having been adjudicated as “mentally defective” and possessing a stolen firearm. A message was left with her federal public defender.
She was charged with attempted murder in the 2015 shooting of firearms instructor Darryl Montague in Westford. Montague survived being shot multiple times.
Earlier this month, Chittenden County State’s Attorney Sarah George dropped charges against Lewis and in two other high profile cases because evidence showed the defendants were legally insane at the time.
