Dog Prowls Airport for 16 Hours

February 19, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ Prince the show dog didn’t get a royal welcome in New York.

The Belgian Tervuren valued at $100,000 spent the night in a cold rain at Kennedy International Airport after his cage was toppled by strong wind.

After nearly 16 hours on the loose, Prince was spotted Wednesday morning near Jamaica Bay, on the airport’s outskirts, by his Danish owner, Gunnar Eriksrud, and the Port Authority police’s K-9 unit.

``He was wet, hungry and shaking, out there in the thunder and lightning all night,″ Officer Don Firehock said.

Prince, a long-haired herding dog who weighs about 50 pounds, had been at stud in Los Angeles and was flown to New York en route to Brussels, Belgium. Prince escaped when his cage blew over as it rode up a conveyor belt to a Delta flight Tuesday night.
