Billerica’s Ellen Sargent Was One of a Kind
We are writing to lament the passing of a wonderful woman. We recently attended funeral services for Ellen Sargent of Billerica who was our friend for many years. Ellen was involved in many facets of our town and was always willing to help improve Billerica. Her list of accomplishments is very long indeed. She ran the gamut of civic involvement from Girl Scout Volunteer to elected office.
Ellen served as an elected member of our Planning Board with distinction and later on our Zoning Board of Appeals. She was a Town Meeting member for many years as well. Ellen believed you don’t have to make headlines to get the job done. Many times she would sit at a meeting and quietly listen to the debate. Then after much discussion by others, of often hotly debated subjects, Ellen would sum every thing up with a precise motion. That motion would succinctly address the problem and settle the debate. Ellen was an informed citizen for years and attended public meetings of just about every Billerica board. She had opinions but always was willing to listen to another point of view. We never heard her say a negative thing about others.
Her love of our town and of her two children, Charlie Jr. and Ellen Jr., were known to all who knew her. We will miss her and Billerica will not be the same without her for we may never see her kind again.
