Jamaica to increase penalties to curb overfishing

July 5, 2014

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica’s government says it plans to increase the penalties for violating fishing laws.

Sen. Sandrea Falconer says the island is still struggling with pollution, overfishing and degradation of breeding grounds. She says the current fines that range from $1 to $44 are too low.

A government statement released Friday said officials have set aside more than $300,000 to protect the ecosystem and prevent depletion of natural resources in Pedro Cays, a popular fishing site off of Jamaica’s southwest coast.
