Billerica Rides High in Pony League, Claiming a Second Straight Crown
The Billerica White baseball team won its fourth straight playoff game against higher-seeded teams to capture the Suburban Pony League’s 14-15 Division championship on Friday night.
Billerica posted a 9-4 win over second-seeded Westford to claim the crown.
After a loss on Sunday pushed fourth-seeded Billerica White to the edge of elimination, the team rallied with an extra-innings win over third seed North Andover, a come-from-behind win over top-seeded Billerica Green, and a two-game sweep of Westford.
The Billerica White team, comprised of all 14 year old players, won the 13-year-old division of the Suburban Pony League last year.
After falling behind 2-0, Billerica tied the game in the second inning on a two-run, two-out single by Chris Roberts. The score remained tied into the fourth when Jack Glennon executed a squeeze bunt, scoring Harrison Tucker with the go-ahead run.
Billerica then exploded for five runs in the fifth inning on walks to Joe Hartka and Joe Dufour and singles by Kyler MacDonald, Craig Barnes, Tucker and Michael Sibert.
After Westford closed the gap to 8-4 in the sixth inning, Billerica would add an insurance run as Roberts singled to drive in his third run of the game, scoring Sibert, who had singled earlier in the inning.
Also contributing to the win were Jeff Goguen, Cam Pontes and Tommy Santos.
MacDonald earned the win pitching four strong innings and giving up only two unearned runs while Dufour pitched the final inning to preserve the victory.
