Michalczewski Stops Lakatos

May 5, 2001

BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany (AP) _ Dariusz Michalczewski successfully defended his WBO light heavyweight title for the 19th time Saturday, stopping Spain’s Alejandro Lakatos in the 10th round.

Michalczewski, a Polish-born German celebrating his 32nd birthday, improved to 44-0 with his 37th knockout. He hit Lakatos with a left hand that left the Spaniard unconscious for a minute.

Michalczewski’s camp said they expect a fight against Roy Jones Jr., the only light heavyweight ranked above him, by the end of the year in the United States.

``I think it’s a fight boxing fans want to see, it would be good for boxing,″ Michalczewski said.

Lakatos dropped to 15-1-1.
