Man suspected in multiple shoplifting incidents

HUNTINGTON — The following information was provided by police reports filed in the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office:

SHOPLIFTING: One man was arrested around 1 a.m. Tuesday after he was accused of taking $809.68 worth of merchandise from Walmart in Barboursville.

James Mitchell Stapleton, 52, was jailed at Western Regional Jail at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday. He is charged with petit larceny and obstruction. Bond was set at $5,000.

The suspect was stopped as he was allegedly pushing a shopping cart full of merchandise down the road. The report states the suspect allegedly gave officers a false name and a false date of birth but eventually told officers his real name. The suspect allegedly told officers he was scared when they asked According to the report, most of the items in the shopping cart were food items.

Two other involved parties told officers the suspect had asked them for a ride to Walmart and were released from the scene. Cabell County 911 told officers all three parties were suspects in multiple shoplifting incidents at the Barboursville, Huntington and Hurricane, West Virginia, Walmart stores.

The Huntington Police Department listed 12 new incident reports in the 24-hour period ending at 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the printout released by the department. However, the individual police reports were not made available, so these are the only known details:

Destruction of property — misdemeanor, 3:51 a.m. Tuesday, unit block of Washington Avenue.

Strangulation, 2 a.m. Tuesday, 1600 block of 8th Avenue.

Petit larceny, 2 a.m. Tuesday, 500 block of 7th Avenue.

Possession of a controlled substance, 12:24 a.m. Tuesday, 400 block of West 18th Street.

Warrant service/execution, 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, 700 block of 6th Avenue.

DUI less than 0.150, 6:01 p.m. Monday, West 18th Street and Washington Avenue.

Obstructing by making false statements to officer, forgery of a public document, accessory before and after, 3:35 p.m. Monday, 2400 block of 3rd Avenue.

Identity theft, 9 a.m. Monday, no location provided.

Found property, 11:32 a.m. Monday, 1200 block of 9th Street.

Breaking and entering, 10:04 a.m. Sunday, 1300 block of 16th Street.

Destruction of property — misdemeanor, 1:20 a.m. Monday, 1000 block of 9th Avenue.

Possession of marijuana, 11:27 p.m. Sunday, Norway Avenue and Woodland Drive.

The following information was provided by booking records kept at Western Regional Jail:

Cody Robert Whitt, 21, was jailed at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities in Cabell County charged him with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of altered Sudafed. Bond was not set.

Danny Ray Hitchcock, 34, was jailed at 2:50 p.m. Monday. Authorities in Putnam County charged him with possession of counterfeit with intent to utter and possession of a controlled substance. Bond was $23,500 cash-only.

Stephen Brent Riggs, 39, was jailed at 8 p.m. Monday. Authorities in Putnam County charged him with daytime burglary and conspiracy to commit a felony. Bond was not set.

Steven Ray Davis, 35, was jailed at midnight Monday. Authorities in Wayne County charged him with possession of altered Sudafed or altered precursors. Bond was not set.
