Sylke Otto Wins World Cup Luge Event
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Sylke Otto of Germany won the women’s luge World Cup, a race delayed for more than five hours then shortened Saturday because of strong winds.
The first runs were canceled after 16 athletes in a field of 22 bounced against the track walls because of the wind. After two attempts to restart the race failed, the event was reduced to a one-run shootout.
Otto finished in a time of 46.817 seconds, beating teammate Barbara Niedernhuber, second in 46.974. Veronika Orlova of Austria was third in 47.191.
