Indiana Artist Arrested in Wife’s Killing
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A woman was apparently beaten to death with a dumbbell while she slept, and her husband was arrested, police said.
John M. Bigelow was detained Tuesday after he called his son’s high school and said he wouldn’t be able to pick up the teen-ager because he had killed his wife, said a police spokesman, Lt. Paul Ciesielski.
School officials then called police, who found Marianne Hedges dead in the couple’s home. Bigelow, 63, was standing outside and was cooperative when officers arrived, police said.
Investigators believe Hedges, 52, died from repeated blows from a 5-pound dumbbell, Ciesielski said. She appeared to have been sleeping when she was killed, he said.
Police said Bigelow was struggling with family issues but there had been no previous trouble at the home.
Bigelow, a graphic artist for The Indianapolis Star, had been on leave from work since December.
He was in jail without bond Wednesday on a preliminary charge of murder.
