Firefighters recover body in St. Marys near confluence of rivers
The Fort Wayne Fire Department dive team recovered a body today in the St. Marys River near Three Rivers Apartments.
The body, believed to be that of a man, was found inside a black tent, snagged by river debris. The tent was discovered by Fort Wayne Parks Department employees around 1:15 p.m. as the crew was finishing a shift, said Mike Joyner, Fort Wayne Police Department public information officer.
An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning. Investigators aren’t sure whether the death was suspicious, Joyner said.
If the coroner finds the death to have been a natural occurrence, the Department of Natural Resources will take over the investigation. If the death is ruled a homicide, it will become a case for city police, Joyner said.
A homicide detective and crime-scene investigators were at the scene. Joyner said the body appeared to have been in the water for some time.
