3 Champions Upset at World Judos
MUNICH, Germany (AP) _ Yurisleidis Arencibia of Cuba upset Olympic gold medalist Isabel Fernandez of Spain in a semifinal of the under-125 pound class, then beat Tania Ferreira of Brazil at the World Judo Championships Saturday.
``I knew I would become world champion when I beat Fernandez,″ said Arencibia, the world junior champion.
Turkey’s Huseying Ozkan, also an Olympic champion, was beaten in the preliminary rounds in the men’s under-145 pound class, as was Olympic gold medalist Legna Verdecia of Cuba in the women’s under-114.
Russia’s Vitali Makarov won the men’s under-161 and Iran’s Arash Miresmaeli took the under-145, while 1996 Olympic champion Sun-Hui Kye of North Korea won the women’s under-114.
Makarov, who was runner-up at the 1999 worlds, beat Yusuke Kanamura by throwing the young Japanese over his back and onto the mat.
