‘Cosmo’ Bachelor Charged With Rape
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ A man named the ``most wanted″ bachelor in Massachusetts by Cosmopolitan magazine has been charged with drugging and raping a woman.
Ryan C. Martin, 22, was arrested Thursday at the Worcester home he shares with his mother. He pleaded innocent later that day and was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.
Police said the alleged victim, who is 23, and another woman met Martin at Walshy’s Bar on Aug. 8, and the three then went to another bar which Martin managed at the time.
Martin served alcohol to the two women, and then gave them each a small plastic cup containing a green liquid which he said was something from a nutrition store, said Detective Lt. William P. O’Connor, head of the city’s sexual assault investigation unit.
The women became sleepy and unable to drive, O’Connor said, and agreed to stay at Martin’s home until they felt better.
The next morning the victim woke up and, thinking she may have been sexually assaulted, went to the hospital. Lab tests given by the state police showed her blood was contaminated with gamma-hydroxybutyrate or GHB, a powerful synthetic central nervous system depressant. It is one of the so-called ``date rape drugs″ that have been implicated in numerous sexual assaults across the country.
Martin was among the single men profiled in a special summer issue of Cosmopolitan called ``All About Men.″ In an article titled ``America’s Most Wanted (Men, That Is),″ Cosmopolitan profiled one eligible bachelor from each state and the District of Columbia.
Defense attorney Anthony M. Salerno said the alleged victim was drinking with Martin and voluntarily went to his house.
