Blues & Brews moves to late August in Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The 14th annual Blues & Brews beer fest is set for 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, in Lock 3 downtown.

The festival – presented by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., the Winking Lizard and the city of Akron – is at the downtown park at 200 S. Main Street. It usually draws 2,000 to 2,500 people, Thirsty Dog’s John Najeway said. Volunteers are still needed. Interested folks can email beermeister@bluesnbrews.org.

About 60 breweries - more than 40 from Ohio plus 20 regional ones - will be represented.

“When we started this 14 years ago, there were 25 breweries in Ohio,” Najeway said. “Now there’s 245.”

Tickets are $35 and come with 25 sample tickets and commemorative glass. VIP tickets are $60 and allow for two advance hours, noon to 2 p.m., and include lunch and limited-edition and barrel-aged ales. Designated-driver tickets are $15 and include lunch and root beer.

The event includes free parking, multiple bands and indoor bathrooms, Najeway said.

The pre-fest barrel-aging event the night before will not take place. He said the fest – usually held in early August – was moved to coincide with the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival, which is being held Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 23-26. Plus it’s a busy time for events.

“Too much going on, with the World Series of Golf and (Pro) Football Hall of Fame and Browns training camp,” Najeway said. “There’s so much going on.”

After Blues & Brews, Thirsty Dog - Summit County’s oldest and largest brewery – will get ready for its second annual Octoberfest at Lock 3. It’s teaming with
