October 17, 1999

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. (AP) _ St. Mary’s College has hired Alfred Johnson as interim men’s basketball coach to replace Othell Wilson, who was placed on leave after his arrest on rape charges, the school announced Sunday.

Johnson spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Tuskegee University. Since 1990, he has served as an assistant coach at Alabama State, Tennessee State, Elizabeth City State and Manor Junior College in Jenkintown, Pa.

Wilson, who played with Ralph Sampson at Virginia, was accused last month of abducting a 22-year-old woman and raping her at his apartment. Wilson played on Final Four teams in 1981 and 1984 before moving on to the NBA, where he played with Sacramento and Golden State.

The 38-year-old Wilson had promoted to head coach at St. Mary’s in August.
