South Carolina mayor takes on white supremacist monument

November 22, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — North Augusta’s mayor says he knows South Carolina law won’t let him take down a monument honoring a white supremacist without hard-to-get legislative approval.

So instead. Mayor Bob Pettit wants to add other memorials honoring the eight black men executed in the racist 1876 attack called the Hamburg Massacre to the obelisk honoring Thomas Meriwether.

Pettit didn’t pay attention to the statue until a constituent challenged city council after white supremacist violence led to the death of a woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, in September 2017.

Pettit formed a committee and wrote an extensive report. He wants city council to give him permission to move forward on commissioning the new memorials.

Meriwether’s group of white men planned an attack to remove blacks from power in Reconstruction South Carolina.
