Australian leg of world 7s series moves to Sydney from 2016
SYDNEY (AP) — The Australian leg of the International rugby board’s Sevens World Series will move to Sydney from the Gold Coast next year.
The Australian Rugby Union announced Monday the event would be played at the Sydney Football Stadium.
In its 16th season, the Sevens World Series consists of nine tournaments held around the world. The Sydney event will be held just months before Rugby Sevens makes its debut at the Olympics at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said the attention on the shortened form of rugby was growing ahead of the 2016 Olympics.
He says, “Sydney is one of the world’s iconic cities, a sports-mad city with an exceptional record of attracting and hosting major events like Rugby World Cup and the Olympic Games.”
