State officials urge boat safety practices this holiday weekend
Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer and many people will be out on the water to celebrate the holiday.
But law enforcement officials say people should be mindful of boating safety tips. The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission said extra patrols will be out on all the lakes in Wake County during the holiday weekend. Last year in North Carolina, there were 192 boating accidents, and 35 people were killed, according to the Wildlife Resource Commission.
The agency uses big boating holidays like Memorial Day weekend to remind boaters about how to stay safe for the season.
“The biggest piece of advice is to wear your life jacket,” said enforcement officer Brent Ward.
He said 70 percent of boat fatalities occur because the person drowned afterward.
