TORONTO (AP) _ Jerry Schunk, a non-roster rookie, hit a three-run home run in the second inning Friday night as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Mets 7-3 at the SkyDome.
Schunk, who entered the game at second base in the second inning after Roberto Alomar was hit by a Frank Viola fastball, went 2-for-3 and made two spectacular diving grabs that earned a standing ovation from the 33,195 fans at the rare exhibition game in Canada.
Viola struggled, giving up a two-run triple to Joe Carter in the first and Devon White’s solo home run in the fourth. Viola allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings, struck out two and walked one.
Howard Johnson hit a solo homer in the second off David Wells, Johnson’s second home run of the spring. Terry Puhl’s RBI single drove in the Mets’ second run.
Ed Zosky added an RBI single in the seventh for the Blue Jays. The Mets scored a run in the ninth on Orlando Mercado’s RBI single.
Wells got the victory, allowing two runs and four hits in three innings.
