MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Pitcher Lee Tunnell was called up by the Minnesota Twins from their Class AAA Portland, Ore., farm club and infielder Doug Baker was returned to the Pacific Coast League team on Friday.

Tunnell, 21-28 with a 4.18 earned run average in six major-league seasons with Pittsburgh and St. Louis, was 2-3 with a 1.80 earned run average and three saves for Portland.

Tunnell, who struck out 34 and walked 10 in 40 innings at Portland, replaces German Gonzalez in the Twins' bullpen. Gonzalez was placed on the 15- day disabled list Thursday.

Second baseman Wally Backman returned from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday.
