Barboursville baseball team eliminated from TOSC
GREENVILLE, N.C. — West Virginia split its final pool play games Monday in the Little League Baseball (age 9-11) Tournament of State Champions and failed to advance.
West Virginia’s all-star state champions from Barboursville won a morning contest against Florida, 7-5, before losing an afternoon game against Tennessee, 11-7, and completed pool play with a 1-2 record. The top four seeds as well as any team with a winning record (2-1 or better) advanced to the single-elimination bracket round that begins Tuesday.
The West Virginia-Florida game was postponed Sunday. West Virginia scored three in the third inning and four in the sixth inning. The Florida team from Palm City rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning and had the tying run at the plate before West Virginia escaped the jam.
Cade Johnson (2-for-4, double), Corey Otzenberger (2-for-4), and Cole Ferguson (2-for-4) led the West Virginia offense. Bryson Shirkey and Caden Vititoe had base hits. Vititoe was also the winning pitcher.
Tennessee’s champion from Goodlettsville advanced to the single-elimination portion of the TOSC with its victory against West Virginia. Tennessee used a four-run fifth inning to break at 7-7 tie.
Riley Bowles and Vititoe both were 3-for-4 for West Virginia. Corey Otzenberger was 2-for-3 with a double and Eli McGinnis was 2-for-3. Johnson, Ferguson and Bryson Shirkey had the other West Virginia hits.
MAJOR SOFTBALL: Tennessee defeated North Carolina, 4-3, in Monday’s championship game of the Little League Softball (age 10-12) Southeast Region tournament in Warner Robins, Georgia. Tennessee joined Central Region winner Wheelersburg, Ohio, in the Little League World Series, Aug, 8-15, in Portland, Oregon.
The Tennessee all-star team from Daniel Boone Little League in Gray, Tennessee, defeated West Virginia’s champion from Barboursville in the Southeast Region semifinals.
MAJOR BASEBALL: West Virginia state champion Barboursville begins play Friday in the Little League Baseball (age 10-12) Southeast Region tournament at Southeast Park in Warner Robins, Georgia. West Virginia plays its first game at 1 p.m. Friday against the Virginia champion.
