NEW YORK (AP) _ Summer Colony made a successful jump from allowance to stakes company, winning the $111,100 Ladies Handicap by a neck at Aqueduct on Saturday for her fifth straight win in eight starts this year.

The favorite was ridden by John Valazquez and led wire to wire, with Stop for Schnapps finishing strongly for second place in the field of nine.

Strolling Belle was another 4 3/4 lengths behind in the Grade III race for fillies and mares 3 years old and up.

Summer Colony broke her maiden at Saratoga on Aug. 17 and then breezed through allowance conditions in her next three trips to the post.

Summer Colony, carrying 114 pounds, covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:05 4/5 on the fast inner track to earn $66,600 for owner-breeder Edward Evans. Evans also won this race with Dance Teacher in 1989.

Summer Colony returned $4.50, $3.20 and $2.60. Stop for Schnapps paid $6.90 and $4.70 and Strolling Belle showed at $3.50.

Also, jockey Julio Pezua was suspended for 10 days for what stewards said was careless riding during the ninth race at Aqueduct on Dec. 6. The suspension begins Sunday and ends Jan. 1.
