Shady Character Is Favored in Cane
FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) _ Shady Character drew the No. 5 post and has been made the 5-2 morning line favorite for Saturday’s $379,941 Cane Pace Final for 3-year-olds at Freehold Raceway.
The 44th annual Cane Pace is the first leg of the Pacing Triple Crown, and will mark the first time a Pacing Triple Crown event will be held in New Jersey.
Also entered in post position order are: 1. Color Striped (6-1); 2. Love That Jate (12-1); 3. Emergency Signal (4-1); 4. Dragon Again (7-2); 6. Pacific Dynasty (10-1); 7. Force of Life (20-1); 8. Day In A Life (9-2).
The winner’s share is $189,970, and there will be a first-ever $250,000 bonus to the owners of any horse in the Cane that can sweep the Pacing Triple Crown. That would include winning the Cane Pace, the little Brown Jug on Sept. 24, and the Messenger Stake on Oct. 16.
Last week, Shady Character won his $63,323 elimination division for driver Mike Lachance, scoring a 3 3/4-length romp in 1:52.3, the second-fastest mile by a three-year-old at Freehold.
