Williams Jr., Johnson Lead U.S. Open

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Liz Johnson topped the fields Wednesday night after the first round of match play in the Bowling Proprietors Association of America U.S. Open

Williams, 4-4 in match play, led the men’s division with a 40-game pinfall total of 9,168. Johnson, 6-2 in match play, held the lead in the women’s competition with a 8,777 total.

Ted Hannahs followed Williams at 9,003. Defending champion Dave Husted was third at 8,832, followed by Kevin McGerr (8,751) and Bill Oakes (8,904).

Marianne DiRupo was second in the women’s standings at 8,707, followed by Carol Norman (8,679), Debbie McMullen (8,589) and Nikki Gianulias (8,525).

The top four men and women after Thursday’s final round of match play will advance to the stepladder finals Friday night at Market Square Arena.
