PGC Approves Saturday Opener For Firearms Deer Season
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Game Commission has voted 5-3 to open the statewide firearms deer season on a Saturday. The vote by the board of commissioners at this morning’s quarterly meeting makes the change effective this year. The season will begin on Saturday, Nov. 30. It will end two Saturdays later as is customary. The rifled deer season has started on a Monday for decades, but today’s historic vote didn’t come as a surprise. The board in January, by a unanimous 8-0 vote, gave preliminary approval to the Saturday opener. Brian Hoover, Southeast Region commissioner, said at the time that the change had been discussed for some time. He cited the fact that fewer school districts are closing the Monday after Thanksgiving, which means fewer youngsters have the opportunity to hunt deer on opening day. Other groups adversely affected with the Monday opening day include college students, and those new to their jobs who can’t take weekdays off, Hoover had said.
