3-year-old girl unhurt after chase and crash on New Year’s Eve
A man involved in a chase with deputies along the Sam Houston Parkway left a 3-year-old child behind when he stopped his vehicle and fled on foot.
Harris County Constable Precinct 5 deputies chased 31-year-old Corey Terrell Thomas after he failed to pull over for routine traffic stop at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, in the 1500 block of West Sam Houston Parkway North. According to a Constable’s Office report, “Thomas exited the tollway but refused to stop, speeding through a parking lot and then running two red lights on Hammerly Boulevard.”
“While running the second light, Thomas’ car was struck by an SUV and slid into a pickup truck before coming to rest,” Constable Ted Heap’s office reported. “Thomas exited the vehicle and ran, leaving his 3-year-old daughter in the back seat, where she had been riding during the pursuit.”
Thomas was chased, subdued and arrested after a short foot pursuit while “witnesses attended to the little girl until backup patrol units arrived.”
The girl was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she was medically cleared and released to her mother the evening on Dec. 31.
Thomas had multiple outstanding warrants from other law enforcement agencies. He was checked and cleared at a local hospital before being arrested on felony charges of evading arrest and child endangerment.
Drivers of the other two vehicles damaged in the pursuit were also unharmed.
Deputies are still looking for two other passengers who exited the suspect’s vehicle after the crash and also fled the scene on foot.
