Aiken man shot, killed on Cherokee Street

December 21, 2018

Officers with the Aiken Department of Public Safety shutdown South Boundary Avenue and Powderhouse Road on Thursday evening while they searched for two suspects following a shooting on Cherokee Street in downtown Aiken.

The shooting resulted in the death of 27-year-old Carl Boyd, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a release.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. Thursday, two unidentified suspects knocked on the door of a residence on the 200 block of Cherokee Street, Carlton said in a release. Boyd allegedly answered the door and was shot.

The suspects fled the scene on foot before police arrived, said Capt. Marty Sawyer, with Aiken Public Safety.

Officers responded to the scene and called EMS to transport the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment, Sawyer said.

Boyd was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers where he was pronounced dead, Carlton said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Newberry.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects is asked to contact Aiken Public Safety at 803-642-7620.
