SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Tennis New South Wales and Tennis Australia have provided nearly $4.4 million toward the construction of the Olympic Tennis Center, the biggest contribution by any Australian sport involved in the Games.
SOCOG, the Olympic organizing committee, has also provided more than $630,000 toward the cost of the $22 million center, with the balance coming from the New South Wales state government.
Work on the foundation of the center court began this week and the 16-court complex will be completed in time for a test event in September.
Because of the additional funds from the tennis governing bodies, the permanent capacity of the center court has been increased to 10,000 from 7,000.
The circular center court stadium is modeled on the new No. 1 court at Wimbledon.
