Incumbents win re-election to Kishwaukee College board

MALTA – Incumbent board members Kathleen Spears and Kathleen Watkins will return to the Kishwaukee College Board of Trustees after being re-elected on Tuesday.

Two six-year terms were up for grabs in the election. According to unofficial vote totals from DeKalb, Lee and Ogle counties, Watkins was the leading vote-getter with 4,241. Spears, the board secretary, finished second with 4,061 votes. Challenger Don Young of DeKalb was third with 2,991.

Both Spears, of Shabbona, and Watkins are finishing their first six-year terms on the community college board. Watkins is a former executive director of the Kishwaukee Education Consortium and has said she wanted to continue her affiliation with the school by serving on the board.

Spears is an accountant who has served on the Indian Creek District 425 school board and the college board, who said her business and education background would be helpful.

Kishwaukee College is a two-year college that offers five transfer degrees and over 70 occupational degrees and certificates 5,000 students annually.
