New UNMC post for Laurel native

A Laurel native has been selected to serve as the director of the division of physical therapy education for the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Allied Health Professions.

Betsy (Adkins) Becker, who has served as a faculty member at the college since 2013, received her doctor in preventative and societal medicine from the UNMC last weekend.

She also received her master of physical therapy degree from UNMC and a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of South Dakota. She is also a certified lymphedema therapist through the Lymphology Association of North America.

Prior to joining UNMC, she was the founding director of the Southeast Community College physical therapist assistant program. Becker has practiced physical therapy in a variety of practice settings in Nebraska and Arizona.

At UNMC, she has primary teaching responsibilities in the areas of foundational skills and management of chronic health conditions with a special interest in oncology and lymphedema.

She serves as vice chairwoman of the Nebraska State Board of Physical Therapy and serves on the board of directors for the Foreign Credentialing Committee of Physical Therapists.

Becker has presented nationally and internationally and published peer-reviewed articles. Representing UNMC and Physical Therapy, she has traveled to China several times to review and teach physical therapy practices abroad. She is the co-editor and author of four chapters in the book titled “Integrating Physical Activity into Cancer Care: An Evidenced-based Approach.”

Becker and her husband, Dr. Mark Becker, reside in Omaha. She is a graduate of Laurel-Concord High School and the daughter of Rick and Joan Adkins of Laurel.
