Bondy’s eighth-grade Dark volleyball team defeats Beverly Hills 25-18, 25-7
HOUSTON - The Bondy Intermediate School one-two punch of Briana Baker and Samantha Castro carried the Lady Patriots eighth-grade Dark volleyball team to a 2-0 district victory over rival Beverly Hills in the Bears Gym Thursday.
Baker held serve for 16 points and Castro 15 as Bondy rolled to 25-18, 25-7 wins.
The Lady Patriots never trailed in the two games, relying on the excellent serving of Baker and Castro to build early advantages.
In Bondy’s rotation of servers, the two girls are the opening two to deliver balls over the net. In Game 1, Bondy owned a 14-2 lead after the two were done and in Game 2, Bondy was up 19-5 after the pair were finished serving the ball.
Baker’s best streak arrived in Game 1 when she held serve for 10 straight points after a Bears service error deposited her at the line.
It was ace after ace for Baker, whose fast and accurate deliveries befuddled Beverly Hills’ serve-receivers.
In the second game, Castro helped her cause to stay at server when she passed to Brianna Torres who put the ball down for the kill. Then came a series of aces, before Castro set a pass for Briana Ramos and she delivered the kill.
When the dust settled, the Lady Patriots were up 13-0.
Baker held serve for her final five points in Game 2 to make it 19-5, before she flubbed a serve. But she immediately put her teammates back on the attack with a hit to the other side of the net that couldn’t be returned.
Beverly Hills’ best moment arrived with Bondy on top 23-11 in Game 1. The Lady Bears outscored the Patriots 7-1 as Bondy suffered some serve-receive headaches.
But Bondy secured the 1-0 lead in games when its 24th and 25th points were due to Beverly Hills service errors.
