Akron Children’s Hospital to open new facility for primary care, rehabilitation in Massillon in early 2019

AKRON, Ohio - Akron Children’s Hospital is expanding pediatric services to Massillon families, with a new facility currently under construction.

The 14,000 square-foot facility, located at 1149 Lincoln Way East, is planned to open in early 2019 and will provide medical service for infants through young adults, 21-years old.

Akron Children’s Pediatrics will be staffed by a board-certified pediatrician and a pediatric-trained nurse practitioner, in addition to pediatric nurses, medical assistants and an operations manager.

Services offered at the Massillon facility will range from checkups and immunizations to treatment for illness and injury and management of chronic diseases. Once the facility is established, Children’s will add a pediatric mental health expert to work with families on depression, anxiety, ADHD and behavioral issues, as well as positive parenting.

Rehabilitative services will also be offered through physical, occupational and speech therapists who will help children with injuries, illnesses, diseases and disabilities.

“In many cases, children have therapy appointments weekly or even several times a week, so having the therapists close to home is a convenience we know parents appreciate,” said Director of Rehabilitative Services Mary Marino in a news release.

Akron Children’s will also offer Massillon patients sports rehabilitation, through the only pediatric-focused sports rehabilitation program in the region.

“Akron Children’s is no stranger to Stark County – with primary, specialty and rehabilitative services in multiple locations,” said Ben Teske, director of operations for Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, in the release. “Most of our services are concentrated in North Canton, so we’re looking forward to expanding to Massillon. Especially for patients who need ongoing therapy or treatment, getting exceptional care close to home is invaluable.”

Future plans for the Massillon location include adding pediatric audiology services. With special training in diagnosing and treating hearing loss in children, Akron Children’s audiology team is working to identify hearing loss as early as possible, provide access to age-appropriate hearing devices, and coordinate follow-up care and evaluation for patients.
