TOKYO (AP) _ A Japanese court sentenced a U.S. Marine to 20 months in prison Tuesday for the fatal hit-and-run last year of a teen-ager on the southern island of Okinawa.

Cpl. Randall M. Eskridge, 23, of LaPorte, Ind., had pleaded guilty to the Oct. 7 accident, when the car he was driving struck the small motorcycle that 18-year-old Yuki Uema was riding.

Eskridge fled the scene. Uema died of head injuries a week later at a hospital.

The prosecution had asked for a 30-month sentence for Eskridge, who was charged with hit-and-run, death through professional negligence and drunken driving.

The case was handled through the Japanese legal system because the crime was committed off base in Japan's jurisdiction.

Okinawans have long resented having most of the 47,000 American troops in Japan stationed on their tiny island, 1,000 miles southwest of Tokyo.
