NEW YORK (AP) _ The Tony Awards next season will add a category to honor ``special theatrical events,'' Broadway presentations that don't fit into the existing 21 categories for musicals, plays and revivals.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee decided on the new category Tuesday.

``With many new forms of entertainment being produced on Broadway, the committee felt the current categories were not sufficient to address the changes we are seeing in the theater,'' said Roy A. Somlyo, president of the American Theater Wing.

Had the award existed this season, Broadway offerings that might have been considered in the category include the Irish dance spectacle ``Riverdance'' or ``Dame Edna: The Royal Tour,'' which is comedy _ the ``dame'' is Australian actor Barry Humphries in drag _ with audience participation.

The American Theater Wing and League of American Theaters and Producers present the Tony Awards, which this year will be given June 4.

PBS and CBS will televise the event from Radio City Music Hall with host Rosie O'Donnell.
