First Lady To Travel to Poland
WASHINGTON (AP) _ First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to Poland and Iceland next week for conferences focusing on women’s economic and social advances and the progress of democracy at the close of the millennium, White House officials said Wednesday.
Mrs. Clinton leaves Monday for two days of meetings in Warsaw with representatives of Baltic governments and the newly independent former Soviet bloc nations.
After brief stops in Slovakia and Italy, she’ll go to Iceland for this year’s Vital Voices conference, focusing on women’s participation in democracy worldwide.
At last year’s gathering in Montevideo, Uruguay, Mrs. Clinton told 1,000 women from throughout the hemisphere that women can make democracy and prosperity spread more widely and deeply than ever.
``If we take our energy and work together ... I think we have a great opportunity ahead of us,″ she said.
Mrs. Clinton will return to Washington on Sunday, Oct. 10.
