Matt Smith: Al Smith Memorial Twins Winter Caravan stop in Winona was a wonderful event

January 23, 2019

The Minnesota Twins Caravan arrived the evening of Wednesday, January 16 to a big crowd of excited baseball fans at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Holy Family Hall.

The voice of the Minnesota Twins, Dick Bremer, was our emcee for the evening. Twins ball players Jake Cave and Tyler Austin did a great job getting the Twins fans in attendance excited about the upcoming season. Twins mascot TC was a big hit. The chicken dinner was delicious, and the chance for everyone to meet our guests and get their autographs was enjoyed by all.

Many thanks to the Minnesota Twins organization and caravan sponsor Case IH for including Winona for a dinner in their schedule every year. The proceeds from the dinner go to our local amateur baseball team, the Winona Chiefs.

Thanks to Larry Boyer and Ron Smith for all of their hard work in getting things ready at the Cathedral for our big event. Many thanks to our Bishop, Father Mark McNae, and the other Cathedral of the Sacred Heart priests for the use of the hall.

Many kudos to Ann and her very capable kitchen crew at HyVee. Thanks also to Matt Senne, Leighton Broadcasting, Plumber’s Mechanical Group, Print House, HBCI, Jack Richter, WNB Financial, Greg Evans, Merchants National Bank, Kim Renk, Lynette Stevens, Edward Jones, Karen Pomeroy, WinCraft, HyVee, Midtown Foods, John Casper, Winona Daily News, and Patrick Marek, Winona Post for the donations that they made to support our event. We couldn’t hold this event without the Chiefs ball players and all of the volunteer work crew — thank you for your time and labor — you are all truly the best.

This year’s event was held in memory of longtime Winona Chiefs business manager Al Smith. Al had been the influence in bringing the Twins Caravan to Winona for over 30 years. I’m sure that he was smiling down upon us all that night.

See you all again in 2020. Go Twins!

Matt Smith, Winona
