Lady O comes close to upset of Skutt Catholic

Beatrice knocked down 12 three pointers Friday night, but it wasn’t quite enough to knock off Class B No. 6 Omaha Skutt.

The Lady O fell to Omaha Skutt 49-48 in over time at the Ozone in Beatrice.

Beatrice knocked down seven three pointers in the first half and led 26-21 at the break. They hit three more three pointers early in the third quarter to extend their lead to 37-24.

Omaha Skutt started using their size in the fourth quarter and they eventually tied the game 39-39 with 3:01 remaining in the game.

Mak Hatcliff gave the Lady O a brief one point lead with a free throw, but Omaha Skutt came back with a basket to make it 41-40.

With one minute left in regulation, Hatcliff ignited the home crowd with a three pointer from the corner, giving the Lady O a 43-41 lead.

Omaha Skutt was able to tie the game, but the Lady O drew a foul with 17.8 seconds left. Both free throws missed the mark, though, but an offensive rebound gave Beatrice one last chance to win it. Olivia Aden’s three pointer at the buzzer missed its mark, sending the game to overtime.

Omaha Skutt opened the overtime period with a three point play and later in the overtime period, they made two free throws to lead 48-43 with 56.2 seconds left.

Beatrice had several attempts on their next possession, but none fell. Addie Barnard eventually scored with three seconds left to make it 48-45.

Omaha Skutt made a free throw to seal the game. Leners hit a three pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 49-48.

Aden had five of Beatrice’s three pointer and led Beatrice with 15 points. Leners had 13, Barnard had 10, Hatcliff had eight and Schwartz had two.

Beatrice’s game plan going in was to pack their defense in and make Skutt beat them from the three point. It worked early as Beatrice was able to build an early lead.

Addie Barnard got the game started with a three pointer and then knocked down another one to answer Omaha Skutt’s three pointer, making it 6-3 early.

The SkyHawks scored the next four points to take a 7-6 lead, but a basket by Carley Leners and a three pointer by Olivia Aden gave the Lady O an 11-7 lead.

Omaha Skutt came back with a free throw, but another three pointer by Aden made it 14-8. After a free throw by Leners, Omaha Skutt ended the first quarter scoring with a three pointer to make it 15-11.

Omaha Skutt started the second quarter with a free throw, but Barnard answered with a basket to make it 17-12. After another SkyHawk free throw, Aden connected again from three point range, making it 20-13.

Omaha Skutt cut the deficit in half with a three pointer, but Mak Hatcliff hit her first three pointer of the game to make it 23-16. After a basket by Skutt, Leners got into the three point act, making it 26-18.

The SkyHawks finished the second quarter with four straight points to make it 26-21 at the half.

Lexi Schwartz opened the third quarter with a basket, but Omaha Skutt came back with a three pointer to make it 28-24. Beatrice then hit three consecutive three pointers to make it 37-24. Aden had two of those three pointer while Leners had the other.

Omaha Skutt score seven of the last eight points in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 38-31.

The SkyHawks opened the fourth quarter on an 8-1 run to tie the game, setting up the dramatic finish.

Beatrice is now 6-8 on the season, they will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Ralston.
