Man Slashes Art in Amsterdam Museum
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ A man was arrested Friday after repeatedly slashing a painting by American artist Barnett Newman at Amsterdam’s prestigious Stedelijk Museum.
The 44-year-old suspect, identified only as G.J. van B., slashed the painting ``Cathedra″ several times Friday morning with a razor-blade knife, Amsterdam police said.
The suspect, who admitted to the vandalism, appeared confused and depressed, police said.
Museum spokeswoman Jacqueline Hagman called the damage was ``very bad,″ and said it was too early to tell whether experts will be able to restore the painting.
The blue monochrome painting was created by the American expressionist in 1951. It has been part of the museum’s permanent collection since 1975.
The painting’s value was not released.
