Husker Extra Recruiting Ticker: Juco DB sets visit; activity in Arizona and Louisiana

November 30, 2018

Welcome to another edition of the Husker Extra recruiting ticker. Nebraska coaches have spent the first week of the contact area predominantly in the South and on the West Coast.

That continues Thursday as NU coaches will be in to see verbal commit Matthew Anderson in Louisiana and others.

OK, some updates:

It didn’t take Tony Wallace long to set up a visit to Lincoln. The junior college defensive back, who is currently at Independence (Kan.) Community College announced Thursday on Twitter that he is planning to visit Lincoln this weekend.

Wallace, listed at 6-foot and 190 pounds, had two interceptions this fall.

Originally from Las Vegas, Wallace was an NU recruit out of high school, but ultimately signed with Arizona in Feb. 2017. He instead wound up in junior college, though, and now has Power Five attention for the second time.

He first announced he had an offer from the Huskers in October. He also sports offers from Minnesota, Toledo and others.

Juco rounds: Wallace wasn’t the only junior college prospect NU visited Thursday. Running backs coach Ryan Held was in Kansas and stopped at Butler Community College as well.

Arizona heat: Arizona was an activity center for the Huskers on Wednesday. Not only did defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and defensive line coach Mike Dawson see four-star defensive end Ty Robinson (Gilbert, Arizona), but the Huskers also spent time with fellow Gilbert standout, four-star defensive back Noa Pola-Gates.

Pola-Gates confirmed late Wednesday that Chinander, secondary coach Travis Fisher and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco were in to see him.

Robinson and Pola-Gates are high on NU’s list and the Huskers are competing with Alabama for each. Robinson’s high school coach told the Journal Star on Wednesday that the Huskers had secured the final in-home visit with the 6-foot-6, 285-pounder before the contact period ends in mid-December (just before National Signing Day), so perhaps Frost will see Pola-Gates on the same day.

Husker commits in action: Most of Nebraska’s verbal commits and recruiting targets are done playing for the season, but at least five will be in action over the next three days.

Running back Dedrick Mills and his Garden City (Kansas) Community College teammates take on East Mississippi Community College tonight in the junior college national championship game in Pittsburg, Kansas. That game is at 7 p.m. and is being broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

GCCC, of course, also has a pair of 2018 NU signees who did not qualify in wide receiver Dominick Watt and offensive lineman Willie Canty. EMCC is the former home of current Husker receiver Mike Williams.

Anderson’s unbeaten Leesville (Louisiana) team is playing in the state semifinals on Friday night.

Then on Saturday, quarterback Luke McCaffrey’s Valor Christian team faces off against offensive lineman Michael Lynn’s Cherry Creek squad for a Colorado state championship in Denver. In Washington, Darien Chase’s Union High will play for a state championship as well.
