Austin Harris wins gold medal at Junior Pan Am Games
Austin Harris won the Junior Pan Am Games 97kg wrestling gold medal Friday in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Harris, a 2017 Roseburg High School graduate, received a first round bye and defeated Gabriel Rocha De Lira of Brazil with a fall in 0:41 in his first match of the tournament.
In his final match he won by 9-0 technical fall over Bryan Peter Cruz Palacios of Peru.
Harris is the second RHS graduate to win gold at the Junior Pan Am Games in the past two years. Haydn Maley, also a 2017 RHS grad, won gold last year at the same weight.
Harris was a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma State University who will be wrestling at 174 pounds the coming school year. Maley was a redshirt freshman at Stanford.
Layne Van Anrooy also graduated from RHS in 2017 and redshirted at Michigan in the last school year.
The trio all have four years of eligibility remaining. They are all members of the class that helped Roseburg win four consecutive Class 6A titles.
Harris won his first state championship at 182 as a senior.
Van Anrooy and Maley became RHS’s first four-time state champions — Van Anrooy, went 49-0 as a senior en route to the championship at 160 and Maley won four state crowns at four different weights, including 220 as a senior.
