NEW YORK _ The New York Mets traded right-hander Willie Blair to Detroit for third baseman Joe Randa on Friday.
Blair was acquired by the Mets from Arizona July 31. Randa hit .254 this year with nine homers.
Blair returns to the Tigers, where he had a career-best season in 1997, going 16-8 with a 4.17 ERA, winning 12 of his final 16 starts.
He filed for free agency after that season, and agreed to a $12.5 million, three-year contract with the Diamondbacks.
But he slumped to a 4-15 record with a 5.34 ERA for the Diamondbacks before being dealt. He then went 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA for the Mets.
Both players, incidentally, have the same birthday: Dec. 18.
