Bicyclist killed in collision with truck in North Spokane
A bicyclist was killed in North Spokane Tuesday after he collided with a freight truck that was turning into a parking lot.
Corporal Ron Van Tassel of the Spokane Police Department said the area of North Havana Street and Boone Avenue where the crash occurred was already closed due to construction, but local businesses were authorized to enter. He said shortly before the crash, construction workers allowed the H&H Express freight truck to enter the area and turn into the Oak Harbor Freight lines parking lot. The bicycle, which was not authorized to be in the construction zone, was riding on the sidewalk and turned into the right lane, hitting the rear portion of the truck.
Van Tassel said firefighters attempted lifesaving measures, but the bicyclist died on scene. He said a helmet was found on scene, which police believe belonged to the victim.
Police don’t believe the truck driver was able to see the bicyclist and he was not injured, Van Tassel said.
