Quakes Shake Etna Volcano

August 30, 1998

CATANIA, Sicily (AP) _ A series of mild earthquakes rattled Mount Etna on Sunday, putting a team of scientists monitoring the volcano on alert for a possible eruption.

Etna has been spewing smoke and sending up showers of hot lava off and on for months, and experts say there is no telling when the volcano might erupt.

By midmorning Sunday, at least seven quakes had been registered in a 24-hour period, although none was strong enough to be felt by residents of the small towns on the volcano’s slopes, the Italian news agency ANSA reported from Catania, a city in eastern Sicily.

The latest quake had a preliminary magnitude of 2.3, the report said.
