Man accused of severely neglecting wife pleads
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — A Louisiana man who severely neglected his wife’s care has pleaded guilty in state district court.
KTBS-TV reports 66-year-old Johnny Essary, of Mira, was sentenced Wednesday to 16 months in jail, with credit for time served since his July arrest.
Essary faced a charge of cruelty to the infirmed after first-responders found 68-year-old Alice Essary alive but unresponsive and in a “state of decomposition.” Investigators said Mrs. Essary was about 50 pounds underweight, suffered from sepsis, had bedsores and was infected with maggots. She also had a broken left arm — an injury suffered earlier but not treated.
A Caddo Parish sheriff’s investigator described the woman’s condition as the worst case of neglect he’d ever seen.
He said Essary didn’t seem like an “evil man; he just seemed very indifferent.”
